“A true test of a person’s leadership…

March 6, 2009

is the health of the organization when the organizer is gone […] Indeed, no man, however gifted and devoted, is indispensable to the work of the kingdom” (J. Oswald Sanders, Spiritual Leadership, 144)

A major goal in ministry is to never become so “important” that a ministry can’t survive when you’re gone. The only Man who is irreplaceable in the church’s mission is Jesus. Paul understood this as well as anyone:

“I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these things to you so that, if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of truth.” (Paul, 1 Tim. 3:14-15)

as he lived out this:

“You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also” (2 Tim. 2:1-2)
