A Church Created with Purpose

November 6, 2008

My buddy, Matt, and I have been going together through 1 Timothy chapter by chapter, verse by verse, word by word. What an awesome letter! One of the lessons that emerges is the continuation of the theme that God created everything with purpose. This begins in Genesis when God put forth a creation with order, purpose, and design and it continues to the church today. Therefore, the church (not the building, not the organization, but the congregation of baptized, born-again believers) has structure, order, and purpose as well. This means that men and women, elders and deacons, all will have specific responsibilities, different roles, and various qualifications. Simply said, 1 Timothy reflects the truth that when God established the church He didn’t just say, “go hang out, be together, and just do whatever you think will work.” Instead, it has specific design, order, and purpose, just like the rest of His work.
