A Church Created with Purpose (another thought)

November 6, 2008

This what I wrote in my Bible as I reflected on 1 Timothy, especially chs. 2-4:

Just as God has implemented order for His creation He has also ordained order for His church. There are expectations for men and women, for those who hold the role of elder or deacon, all bound together by the love and grace of Jesus Christ. This is all crucial to understand when one realizes that the church is the pillar and buttress of truth for Christ (3:15) and there will be those who depart from the faith (4:1). This shows how God’s people (the church) should soundly organize themselves as a congregation.

Therefore, Timothy as a leader should train to understand sound doctrine (4:6) – it is something that must be sought after with a passion. As he was trained for these responsibilities, he now also has the responsibility to command and teach sound doctrine (4:11). He does this by the public reading of Scripture, teaching, and exhortation (4:13). He can do this despite his youth (4:12), and should set an example (4:11) and always keep a close watch on himself and his teaching (4:16).

Thus, sound, Biblical teaching and awareness of false teachers should be important for the church leader because it was important to Paul – this was no light matter.
